Kurt Andersen, the author, most recently, of “Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire,” reviewed Thomas Mallon’s latest novel, “Landfall,” which is set during the George W. Bush years. In 1999, Adam Clymer, a political correspondent for The Times, reviewed Bush’s “A Charge to Keep” for the Book Review.
“A Charge to Keep,” the campaign book by Gov. George W. Bush of Texas, is a puzzling exercise. It offers little more than his standard stump speech does to convey what a Bush presidency might be like. In fact, lines from the standard stump speech are scattered throughout, and the last chapter reprises the basic speech that is being heard these days in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and points west.
The book has its moments. In a section that sounds written by Bush himself, and not by Mickey Herskowitz or Karen Hughes, the writer and press secretary he credits, he tells of his feelings about the death of his little sister Robin. She died at 4 from leukemia, and while it was always clear that this was a blow to his father, former President George H. W. Bush, the son tells it with more ease than his very private father ever did. He was certain, he says, that he saw his little sister’s head in his parents’ car that day in 1953 when they came to see him at grade school: “The instant I saw the car, I . . . took off running, eager to welcome Mom and Dad and my little sister Robin back from New York, where Robin had been seeing a doctor because she was sick. I got to the car, still certain Robin was there, but of course, she was not. Mom and Dad had come to school to tell me Robin wasn’t coming home, not then or ever.”
But for other times of his life that might have mattered, he and Herskowitz, who left the project early, and Hughes, who did most of the writing, leave the reader disappointed. The man who would lead the United States in the world spent six weeks in China in 1975 after graduating from Harvard Business School. All he tells us he learned is that “every bicycle looked the same,” and central planning restricted choice, and capitalism and the marketplace would free the Chinese “to dream and risk.”
One might criticize “A Charge to Keep” (taken from the title of a Methodist hymn of commitment to God) as a wasted political opportunity to explain a potential president. But that is Bush’s problem. A greater concern is that this book is an honest reflection of all there is in a potential president.
